FLOOR PRINTSWhat it is
Sequence your images.
Lay out a body of work, try orders, compare two of them side by side, and print a dummy. A light table, for a book, a portfolio or a wall.

What it needs

Your key
In your download email. Asked for once, at first launch, and checked on your Mac. Keep it: a new Mac asks again. Lost keys: software@filmflamingo.com.
Requires
macOS 12 Monterey or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel.
Takes in
Your images, referenced where they sit. Nothing is imported into a library.
Gives back
Numbered files, a dummy PDF, a spread PDF, or a plain sequence list.
Never does
Modify, move, rename or write to an original. Ever.

FLOOR PRINTSGetting started
The main job

Making a sequence

  1. Add images⇧⌘I, or drop them in. They join the project's pool.
  2. Order them on the FloorDrag. Grid keeps them on a lattice; Loose lets you place them anywhere, the way prints sit on a floor.
  3. Mark what is inIn, Out or Maybe, per image, per sequence. Pin the ones that must not move.
  4. Branch and compareDuplicate the sequence, cut it down, and put the two orderings side by side.

FLOOR PRINTSThe idea

One pool, many sequences

THE POOL12345678SEQUENCE “FULL”31628547SEQUENCE “SHORTER”368147INOUT OR BLANKSECTION BREAK

Every sequence holds an entry for every image in the pool, in its own order, with its own state, pin, placement and note. Shorter is not a different set of files. It is the same pool with fewer images marked In.

FLOOR PRINTSThe Floor

The Floor

Grid and Loose
Grid snaps to a lattice. Loose stores positions in cell units, not points, so zooming scales an arrangement instead of scattering it.
Bigger and Smaller
⌘+ and ⌘−. Zoom scales the whole arrangement, gaps included, so a loose layout keeps its proportions instead of scattering.
Tone strip
The sequence's tonal run, read left to right, for spotting a jump you cannot see while looking at one picture.
Rhythm
The shape of the sequence as a whole.
Loupe
A close look without leaving the Floor.

FLOOR PRINTSSequences

Working a sequence

Blanks
Insert a blank page where the book needs air. It lives in the running order like anything else.
Section breaks
Titled, and they carry through to the pagination.
Shuffle the unpinned
⇧⌘R. Pins hold, everything else re-rolls. Or shuffle into a new sequence and keep the one you had.
Duplicate
Carries the In, Out and Maybe states across, so a branch starts from the edit you had.
Undo
Covers every destructive action, shuffles and deletions included.

FLOOR PRINTSCompare

Compare and Spreads

Compare
⌘2. Two sequences side by side, with the divergence between them shown rather than left to your eye. A run that works in one can be promoted into the other.
Spreads
⌘3. The sequence paginated into pages and spreads, honouring trim, whether the book starts on a recto, and every blank and section break.
Spread notes
Per spread, kept with the sequence.

FLOOR PRINTSExports

Four ways out

Numbered files
Copies of the originals, numbered in sequence order. This is the only function that touches an original, and it opens the file read-only to copy it.
Dummy PDF
The book as a dummy, to print and fold.
Spread PDF
The spreads as laid out.
Sequence list
Plain text. The filenames, in order, readable by anything.
LOT 00411/17
FLOOR PRINTSYour file

The project file

JSON, versioned, with the extension .floorprints.

Not a database and not a package. A text file a person can open in any editor in twenty years and read the filenames out of, whether or not this app still runs. A 1,000-image project is 2.6 MB.

Saving writes to a temporary file beside yours, reads that file back and decodes it, and only then moves it over the real one. A save that cannot be read back does not replace the copy you already had.

FLOOR PRINTSBackups

Backups

Twelve generations
One written on every open, one every five minutes of work, labelled so a choice between twelve timestamps has something besides the timestamp to go on.
Kept in
Application Support, not beside your project. Choosing a file in a save panel grants that file and not its folder, so backups written next to it would stop working the day the app is sandboxed.
Restoring
In the inspector, under Advanced. It lists other projects' backups as well as this one's, and the restore is itself undoable.

Stated plainly

What it does not do

  • It never modifies, moves, renames or writes to an original. After an export your files are byte for byte unchanged, with the same modification dates.
  • No network code of any kind. Help › Check for Updates opens a page in your browser when you ask it to, and nothing fetches a feed on a timer, which is the part of an updater that would disclose your address and the version you are running.
  • It is not an image editor. There is no adjustment, no crop, no develop.
  • It does not manage your files. Images are referenced where they sit, and a moved folder is relinked rather than re-imported.

Where things live

Your project
Wherever you saved it. A .floorprints JSON file.
Backups and caches
In the app's own Application Support and Caches folders.
Your images
Exactly where they were. Referenced by security-scoped bookmark, so a sandboxed build still finds them on a cold relaunch.
